Technical Bulletin: Apprenda Express Installer erroneously validates and links to SQL Server 2012

As part of the Apprenda Express installation process, the Installer checks for and validates a supported version of SQL Server.  If SQL server is not found, the installer provides a link for downloading SQL Server Express.  With Microsoft's release of SQLServer 2012, which the Apprenda Platform does not yet support, validation erroneously acceptes SQL Server 2012 and the provided link leads to a download for SQL Server 2012 Express

If the Apprenda Express Installer does not find a supported version of SQL Server, the installation process is halted and the user is presented with a link to download SQL Server Express:

With the release of SQL Server 2012, this link directs the user to a download for SQL Server 2012 Express.

If SQL 2012 is installed, the Apprenda Express Installer will incorrectly validate it as a supported version of SQL Server.  This will allow the installation process to continue, but will not result in a successful installation of Apprenda Express.

As of version 3.1.3, Apprenda has updated the SQL Express link to explicitly point to a supported version of SQL Server (SQL Server 2008 R2 Express).  Because Apprenda plans to support SQL Server 2012 within the next few months, we have not updated the SQL Server validation step.

Customers should ensure that they are running a supported version of SQL Server when installing Apprenda Express.  They should not proceed with the installation with an unsupported version of SQL Server even if the Installer validates it as an acceptable version.

When SQL Server 2012 support is introduced within the next few months, customers will be able to install and run Apprenda Express using SQL Server 2012.
